The five oven faults we see every week
After 17 years repairing ovens across Brisbane, the same fault pattern keeps coming back. Here’s what’s usually wrong.
Oven element failure (top, bottom, or grill)
The most common oven fault by a long way. A blown element will usually show as: the oven runs but doesn’t heat properly, food cooks unevenly, or — if it’s the grill — half the toast comes out perfect and the other half is still bread. On Bosch and Neff, you can sometimes see the failure visually (a bright spot or a break in the coil). On Miele and ASKO the elements are often shielded, so visual inspection is harder and resistance testing is the diagnostic.
Element replacement is one of the more economical oven repairs — the part is moderate, the labour is quick on most makes.
Thermostat or NTC sensor failure
The oven runs but the temperature drifts — the cake is half-burnt half-raw, the roast takes twice as long. Older mechanical thermostats stick or drift; newer NTC sensors give the control board the wrong reading and the board over- or under-fires the elements. Both are diagnosable with a thermometer reading against the dial setting.
Oven door seal failed, oven loses heat
If the oven heats then drops temperature as soon as it cycles off, the door seal might have perished and the heat’s escaping. Easy fix; the seal is a clip-in part on most makes. Less commonly, the door hinges have weakened and the door doesn’t sit tight against the seal — that’s a hinge replacement, not a seal.
Fan motor failure (fan-forced ovens)
Fan-forced ovens use a fan motor at the back to circulate hot air. When the motor seizes or the bearings fail you’ll hear it whining, scraping, or the fan stops altogether and food cooks unevenly. Common across Westinghouse, Electrolux, Bosch and Smeg models. Motor replacement is straightforward on most makes; pyrolytic ovens are slightly more involved because the rear panel insulation has to come out cleanly.
Control board failure
The modern oven sits on a control board that handles temperature, timer, programme selection and door interlock. When the board fails you’ll get random behaviour — programmes not running, displays flickering, error codes, or the oven simply not turning on. Boards are a parts-order item on most makes. We carry common Bosch, Miele and Neff boards in the van; less common brands are usually 3-5 day delivery.
Pyrolytic, steam and combi ovens
Brisbane kitchens are full of premium ovens these days — pyrolytic self-cleaning, combi-steam, microwave-combi. Always Prompt Repairs services all of them.
- Pyrolytic ovens (self-clean at high temperature): Miele, Bosch, Neff, Smeg, Westinghouse premium. We can fix door locking faults, element failures and programme errors.
- Combi-steam ovens (steam plus convection): Miele, Bosch, Neff, ASKO. Water tank sensor and steam-generator faults are the main repair categories.
- Microwave-combi: convection-microwave hybrid units. Both circuits need to work — diagnostic is the magnetron, the convection element, or the board.
Brands we repair
Authorised warranty agents for Miele, Bosch, ASKO, Liebherr and Neff. In-warranty work on those brands goes through us at the manufacturer’s expense.
Non-warranty repairs on the full Brisbane oven brand spread: Smeg, Westinghouse, Electrolux, Omega, Blanco, Ilve, Ariston, DeLonghi, Fisher & Paykel, LG, Samsung, Beko, Whirlpool, Kleenmaid, Euromaid and more.
We do not service gas ovens, gas cooktops, gas appliances generally, electrical wiring, or air-conditioning. For electric ovens — wall, freestanding, built-in, pyrolytic, steam, combi — that’s our trade.
Where we service
Brisbane City, Logan City, Moreton Bay, Redland, Ipswich and the northern Gold Coast. Most metro Brisbane bookings get a tech the next business day; same-day where the van schedule allows.
Before the tech arrives
- Find the model number — usually inside the door frame, on the rim, or on the back panel if the oven is freestanding.
- Note any error code — photograph the display.
- If it’s a wall oven, mention the cabinetry brand and whether the oven is screwed in from the side or top, when you book.
- Clear the area in front of the oven so the tech can pull it out (freestanding) or work in close (built-in).
